Islamabad: Cement sales in June surged to 5.3 million tons, which shows a 2% rise on a year-on-year (YoY) basis, news sources reported on June 27. Local consumption also rose by 9% to 5.07 million tons. Reportedly, domestic consumption in June also increased by 60% as compared to May 2022.

As per the data shared by the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA), exports fell by 58% on a YoY basis to 0.23 million tons in June 2022, owing to a 51% drop in north-based exports to Afghanistan to 0.01 million tons, along with a 62% drop in south-based exports to 0.13 million tonnes.
Some of the major data highlights of the report are as follows:
- Exports showed improvement on a Month-on-Month (MoM) basis, going up by 32 %, with a 36% growth seen in those of the north, and a 29% uptick in the south-based exports.
- Shipments have continued to lag, with a 44% YoY fall to 5.20 million tonnes noted during the financial year 2021-22 (FY-22) due to a slowdown in sea-based exports to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, as well as liquidity concerns in the bordering Afghan market.
Read: Cement consumption fell by 16% in May: APCMA - During FY-22, the north had a 6% YoY decline to 40.43 million tonnes, with local offtake falling by 3% YoY to 39.52 million tonnes due to poor demand from construction activity and government projects, while exports fell by a substantial 64% YoY to 0.91 million tonnes.
- South-based dispatches fell by 12% year on year, contributing to a 36% drop in exports. Domestic demand in the local south market, on the other hand, remained protected, increasing by 9% year on year in FY-22 to 8.22 million tonnes.
