Karachi: The cement industry is expected to increase its capacity by over 50%, according to a news report. The statistics have been presented by the State Bank of Pakistan’s third quarterly report for fiscal year 2018.
Increased demand and healthy margins have incentivised manufacturers to increase their production capacities, from the present 49.4 million tonnes to 72.8 million tonnes in the next few years. This increased demand can be attributed to development projects and increased demand for private housing schemes. Allied growth in sectors such as steel, chemicals, wood etc. has also been experienced simultaneously.
Presently, there are 24 cement manufacturing units in the country, having an installed capacity of 49.4 million tonnes. Production is carried in two zones, the north and south zones. The south zone has more capacity to increase production.
