Karachi: The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) on Tuesday (September 21) referred the PKR 20.715 billion plan for the revival of Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), news sources reported.

The CDWP committee reviewed a report titled ‘Construction of Infrastructure (Flyover/Underpass Structure) for the Elimination of Level Crossings from the Loop Section of Karachi Circular Railways’ and recommended it to ECNEC for further deliberation. The planned structures under the project, will aid in the elimination of 22 level crossings along the KCR loop from Drigh Road to Karachi City Station, as well as making it a more dependable means of public transportation.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan, in the P-Block Secretariat and was attended by the members of the ECNE, CDWP and the provincial ministers and representatives. The KCR project was launched in response to the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s April decision, which instructed the government to restart the project within nine months in order to improve transportation in the province capital. After much deliberation and allocation of funds Federal Minister for Planning, Development Asad Umar said that Prime Minister Imran Khan is expected to lay the groundwork for the KCR project on September 30.
