Karachi: The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has cleared the Karachi Circular Railway Project (KCR) worth PKR 292.389 billion, a news source reported on October 25.

Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal held a special meeting of the CDWP. As per the details, the project proposes the construction of a 44-kilometre-long dual track, starting from Drigh Road and passing through Federal B Area, North Nazimabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, Lyari, and Sindh Industrial Trading Estate.
Additionally, the project will include the construction of roadway/railway cross-section elements, horizontal and vertical curvature, ramp gradients, and layout of structures with respect to the alignment. The scope of work will also include the construction of stations, warning signs, provision of drivers, regulatory, informatory, passenger facilitation signs, route alignment, and provision of allied facilities.
Moreover, the KCR is an attempt to improve the transport infrastructure of the city including the provision of public transport, road network, and traffic management. The government wants to provide safe, environmentally-friendly, and reliable public transport for the people of Karachi.

The news source mentioned that the said project is expected to be completed within 4 years. The urban rail mass transit system will be serving 457,000 passengers on a daily basis, with the expectation to increase to 1 million passengers in future. It was disclosed that the project will use electric trains and it will be operational for 17 hours throughout the week. Under KCR, 30 stations will be built along the corridor.
