Lahore: The Planning Commission’s Central Development Working Party (CDWP) is expected to allow the Water & Sanitation Agency (WASA) to commence with the construction work on its surface water treatment plant project in the city, according to news sources. The party is anticipated to give its approval during a meeting scheduled for today (Tuesday).
Managing Director (MD) WASA Syed Zahid Aziz revealed the project details; saying that the 100-cusec surface water treatment plant would be constructed at the BRB canal near Bhaini village. The treated water will be free of any arsenic contamination and will be supplied to the Baghabanpura, Shadipura and Mughalpura WASA sub-divisions to reduce the stress on the groundwater of the city, he added.

The MD WASA said that this plant with metered water provision, new pipes and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) controlled supply network would benefit approximately one million people. The project also includes PKR 5 billion for irrigation department works on the BRB canal.
Sources in WASA revealed that the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) had expressed its willingness to offer a PKR 50 billion soft loan for the clean water provision and preservation of underground water aquifer mega project.

Under this initiative; three wastewater treatment plants will be constructed in the Mehmood Booti, Shadbagh and Shahdara areas.
