Islamabad: China Pakistanis Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority Chairman and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Lieutenant General (R) Asim Saleem Bajwa on Saturday announced that the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) had officially approved the USD 7.2 billion worth Railways Main Line-1 project — as per a news source. The project summary has now been forwarded to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for its sanction.

According to the details shared by Bajwa, the proposed project involves the upgradation of the ML-1, and the dualisation of 1,872 kilometres of railway track between Peshawar and Karachi. He further called it a major milestone in the second phase of the CPEC initiative.

Reportedly, the project was approved in a CDWP meeting chaired by Deputy Chairman (Planning) Dr Muhammad Jahanzaib Khan. The meeting approved 13 projects worth more than PKR 30 billion, while the USD 7.2 billion ML-1 project and other development projects worth PKR 184 billion were sent for further approval by the ECNEC, as per the rules.
