Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has identified two areas in the city as the new location for kachi abadis, a news source quoted CDA Chairman Amir Ali Ahmed. The official revealed this information while he was briefing the Senate’s Standing Committee on Climate Change about the various measures being taken to make Islamabad clean and green.

Responding to the questions raised by the committee, the chairman said that the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad has the sole responsibility to maintain cleanliness and dispose solid waste in the federal capital. The committee was also informed that the Naya Pakistan Housing Authority has been tasked with constructing 3,000 low-cost residential units in Alipur Farash, 1,500 units in I-9, and up to 400 units in G-7.

Responding to a question raised by the meeting’s chairperson Senator Sitara Ayaz, MCI Director Cleanliness said that the corporation only had 50 cleanliness staff instead of the required count of 150 for each CDA sector. The chairperson demanded that he be provided with a thorough plan by the CDA in order to improve the cleanliness situation in the city.

In addition, the Committee members shared their suggestions on the matter, with Senator Faisal Javed suggesting a dedicated app could be formed for people to upload videos on the sanitation situation in the country. Environment Department Director General Farzana Altaf Shah also made a recommendation, stating that commercial markets in Islamabad should close down by 8 pm, in order to help people clean up their shops and dump garbage at one dedicated spot.
