Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA), using its own resources, has decided to commence with the construction of the Korang Bridge and underpass, a news source reported. These developments will be pursued under the Islamabad Expressway Signal Free Corridor project — previously approved under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).

While the PSDP has yet to receive any funds this year, the CDA officials decided to allocate PKR 1.5 billion to the project on the CDA’s own behalf. The funds will be taken from the surplus that the authority has managed to achieve in its current account balance.

The bridge and the underpass are expected to reduce traffic issues on the main avenue. It was felt that the construction of the remaining portion of the signal free corridor was critical in order to cater to the increasing traffic burden and population in the adjoining areas. The meeting agreed that short-term measures like protected U-turns will not suffice to help with the project, and the underpass will need to be built at some point.

While the authority is using its own funds this time, it is important to note that the federal government will be requested for allocation of funds during the next fiscal year.
