The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to resume the construction work on the Islamabad Expressway through funds generated from its own resources, a news source reported. As part of the second phase of the project, which has remained stalled for over a year now, the CDA will construct Korang Bridge and an underpass near the PWD Housing Scheme.

Previously, the authorities concerned had announced their intention to carry out the expressway project in a phased manner. They had completed the first phase (from Zero Point to Koral); which included the construction of four interchanges at I-8, Sohan, Khanna and Koral.

But, the development work on the second phase (from Koral to Rawat) faced some delays, owing to the un-availability of funds. The said portion of the expressway had remained dotted with potholes and crates which created inconvenience for the commuters.

The CDA administration visited the place on Tuesday and decided to execute the project through the agency’s own resources. To facilitate the locals and improve the city infrastructure, a sum of PKR 1.5 billion would be allocated from the surplus funds that the CDA had generated.

Instructions for the issuance of a letter seeking permission from the Finance Division and the Planning Commission to access the resources have been dispatched. The department expects a positive reply within a week’s time. After which, it will issue tenders on an immediate basis to commence with the remaining construction work.
