Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) on Wednesday (December 29) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a landfill site for disposal of garbage in the district, according to media reports.

As per the details, 400 kanals of land will be reserved for the permanent garbage disposal in the capital city. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan informed that the civic agency – Sanitation Directorate – offered sanitation services in the municipal limits of Islamabad including Zone-I; which comprised of commercial and residential areas. He added that the Sanitation Directorate has extended its services of garbage collection to the rural area of Islamabad.
Moreover, the minister disclosed that the solid waste volume generated in the city ranges between 550 to 600 metric tons per day, which mostly contains a mixed type of solid waste. In this regard, the agency decided to dispose of the entire garbage at Waste Containment Site, situated in Sector I-12.

Reportedly, a 132-kanal area in Sector H-16/3 has been allotted as a temporary sanitary landfill site. It was also disclosed that the CDA is taking steps to recycle solid waste in the city. For this purpose, 100,000 garbage trolleys and 200 skips were placed in the different areas for waste collection.
