Islamabad: The federal government has notified the formation of a local government (LG) commission to be tasked with overseeing the affairs of both the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI), according to news sources.

Further, the executive has provided its approval to the appointment of Member of National Assembly (MNA) Nawaz Awan as the commission’s chairman. Its members include Senators Seemi Ezdi and Mushahid Hussain Syed, as well as former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf.

The commission members will serve a five-year term, as per the official notification. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (PM) on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan had announced the government’s decision to form the LG board for solving issues of MCI & CDA in December last year; stating it to be a requirement under the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government Act 2015.

The MCI and CDA have some conflicting issues, including the devolution of a handful of CDA departments to the MCI, which will now be handled by the commission.
