Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced the construction of two small dams, Shahdara and Chiniot, to mitigate the water shortage in Islamabad, as reported in a news article on May 23.

According to the details, starting Thursday, the water supply from Simly Dam to Islamabad will be increased by 8 million gallons daily (mgd). Currently, Islamabad’s water demand is approximately 250 mgd, with the city requiring 120 mgd. The CDA currently provides about 70 mgd from Simly Dam, Khanpur Dam, and tubewells. In a recent meeting, CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa directed immediate action on Shahdara, Tarbela, Chiniot, and Khanpur dams to resolve the water crisis permanently. The Chiniot Dam will be in the Simly Dam catchment area and the Shahdara Dam on the Shahdara stream.

The CDA also plans to start work on the Khanpur Dam and Ghazi Brotha project. The CDA Chairman expressed frustration and instructed that a proposal be submitted to address the theft with WAPDA and other organisations.
