Islamabad: A katchi abadi in Sector I-10 was demolished by the Capital Development Authority (CDA), in violation of a stay order granted by the Supreme Court, according to a news source.
According to the Supreme Court stay order granted in the Sector I-11 slum case last year, the CDA cannot demolish any shantytowns that were established before August 2015. However, the Sector I-10 slum was razed on the morning of August 3rd, and many residents were forced out of their homes despite Supreme Court orders, per a news source.
Speaking at an Awami Workers Party (AWP) conference, a former resident of Sector I-11 katchi abadi demolished last year revealed that the dispersed residents were living in desperate conditions. He said that thousands were still homeless and had not been given any relocation options, while the children from the slum were still out of school.
AWP Punjab President Asim Sajjad Akhtar told reporters that there had been no low-income housing scheme in Islamabad for over 15 years. He emphasised that it was the state’s responsibility to provide housing for its citizens.
