According to the details, the decision comes in response to the role of mulberry trees in exacerbating pollen allergies, a growing concern for residents. The initiative was finalised during a high-level meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, which included environmental experts and senior officials.
As part of the plan, approximately 10,000 paper mulberry trees in the Shakarparian area will be removed and replaced with 50,000 new native trees. Additionally, 1,000 mulberry trees along roadsides and drains will make way for 80,000 native plants. The campaign will extend to other sectors of the city, where an additional 10,000 mulberry trees will be replaced with 50,000 new plantings.
This year’s plantation drive will see active participation from the private and corporate sectors, with a focus on introducing fruit-bearing, shade-providing, and flowering trees such as loquat, guava, fig, apricot, peepal, and native mulberry. Educational institutions will also be encouraged to join the effort, fostering a sense of environmental stewardship among students.
This campaign builds on the CDA’s previous successes, including the removal of 5,000 mulberry trees from F-9 Park last year, which was followed by the planting of 10,000 new trees. By prioritising native species, the CDA aims to enhance environmental sustainability, reduce pollen-related health issues, and create a greener, more resilient Islamabad for future generations.
To ensure transparency and public engagement, the CDA will publish a list of climate-suitable trees on its website, helping residents make informed choices for their surroundings. The authority also plans to employ innovative techniques, such as aerial seed dropping and spraying in the Margalla Hills, to boost reforestation efforts.

Private housing societies will be urged to contribute to the initiative, while temporary plant stalls will be set up at subsidised markets during Ramazan to promote accessibility.
