Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to appoint a third-party consultant to assist in identifying and surveying a new landfill site in the city to shift the existing dumping site in Sector I-12 – as the development work kicks off in the sector, news sources reported on July 25. The consultant will prepare a feasibility report after choosing one of the four potential sites: Bhara Kahu, Sangjani, near Old Airport and another near Mandra.

According to CDA Director General (DG) Shahjahan Khan, the new landfill site would be built in compliance with modern scientific and technological requirements. He went on to say that the current location in Sector I-12 is a dump site, not a landfill. Moreover, it was also revealed that the decision to shift the dump site from I-12 was made due to the recent resumption of construction activities in the said sector.

It is worth noting that the CDA and the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) met last year to discuss the possibility of utilising Mandra near Chakwal as a combined dump site. The city generates around 6,000 tonnes of garbage, which is now dumped on I-12 because no adequate disposal site has been constructed yet.
