Islamabad: Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar on Tuesday (August 31) instructed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to conduct a feasibility assessment for two small dams, news sources reported. The proposed dams include the Chiniot dam near Simly dam and the Shahdar dam, which have a combined production capacity of 26 million gallons of water per day for Islamabad residents.

Moreover, CDA officials also briefed the committee regarding the ongoing projects to fulfil the water needs of the city. Some of the projects include the repair of the pipeline from Simly dam that restored 2 million gallons of water per day, restoration of 2 million gallons of water from Rawal dam after repair of the infrastructure. The CDA officials also said that the authority is also installing 30 Tubewells to supply uninterrupted water to the citizens. Also, the CDA has collaborated with the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) to refill and replenish aquifers.

Presently, CDA supplies around 70 million gallons of water per day from three sources: Simly Dam, Khanpur Dam, and tube-wells. However, it plans to get another 100 million gallons of water from the Ghazi Barotha project as well.
