Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to initiate weekend monitoring cycles in order to prevent the expansion of slums in the city, a news source reported. CDA spokesperson Safdar Shah has stated that as per the civic body’s observations, most illegal constructions are built over the weekends: the timeframe in which the authority cannot monitor their developments.

In order to curtail this activity, Shah added that the CDA has decided to assign officials of the enforcement team at the city’s slums during the weekends–in order to prevent these encroachments from arising. He said that the inspectors and supervisors assigned in these locations will take immediate action to remove the constructions before their completion.
Several reports indicate that there are almost 42 slums in Islamabad, at present. The CDA, over the years, has resorted to various courses of action to resolve the issue of their expansion, but all these efforts have largely met with failure. Meanwhile, the residents of these slums continue to live without basic life facilities.

On Saturday, the CDA issued a statement specifying that it would now strictly monitor different areas of the city to check the expansion of slums. The authority’s assigned teams continued to work throughout the weekend, and demolished a number of illegal constructions that were nearing completion.
