Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has allocated 105 acres of land in rural areas to set-up five graveyard sites in the city, a news source reported. This measure is designed to facilitate the residents of Islamabad’s suburban and rural areas, as they will no longer have to bury their dead in their native towns or villages.

The rules state that only residents of the sectors surrounding the proposed graveyard sites will have the right to bury their dead there. Recently, the CDA did relax this rule in light of the shortage of burial spaces in the city. The civic body aims to find a permanent solution to this problem by establishing the five graveyards in rural areas.
CDA has chosen Bhara Kahu, National Park area, Humak, Lakhwal, and Alipur Farash for the graveyards. The authority has allocated 100 kanals of land each in Farash Town and Bhara Kahu. Meanwhile, it has allocated 258 kanals in Lakhwal and 50 kanals in Humak.
CDA officials stated that the local communities in the rural areas had established both ancient and ancestral graveyards in their neighbourhoods, however these cemeteries had now become full. This was causing problems, as the population of Islamabad grows over time.

The civic body hopes to develop the new graveyards on the same model as those established within the sectoral areas of the federal capital.
