Karachi: The drive, titled ‘Blue Jacket Movement (BJM)’, against open littering on the city roads officially commenced at Boat Basin in Clifton on Monday, according to a news source. Deputy Commissioner (DC) South Saeed Salahuddin expressed his views on the matter during a media briefing in which he informed that the first day of the initiative comprised counselling activity.
He said that the authorities they visited 50 eateries and met with their owners to inform them regarding the problems of open littering. Around 60 volunteers clad in blue jacket accompanied him to extend help to these food business owners if so required.

The DC said that the owners of these establishments assured of their commitment to the cause and agreed to become Blue-Jacket compliant. The eatery owner went as far as to remove any furniture place beyond the kerbstones. The customers were made aware of their responsibility to properly dispose of trash as in the BJM-compliant zones, no open littering will be tolerated, he added.
The DC also revealed that the campaign had received the government’s approval to install 3,500 new dustbins in appropriate locations. He also expressed hopes that this first positive experience would create a ripple effect throughout the city.

Previously, the initiative was announced amid Independence Day celebrations held at Teen Talwar in Clifton with an aim to change peoples’ perception of their civic duties.
