Islamabad: The federal cabinet on Tuesday (January 25) approved PKR 5 billion for the commencement of the 7th housing and population census, news sources reported. It would be Pakistan’s first digital census, carried out in accordance with international standards and best practices.

According to reports, the cabinet has approved the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC)’s decision to release funding for the project at a meeting presided over by Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan. The committee also authorised the project’s completion timeline. The seventh census, according to the briefing, will be completed by December of this year. While the results of the pilot project will be launched in April/May. The decision came after the Council of Common Interests (CCI) approved the census at its 49th meeting a few weeks ago. As a part of the decision, a Census Monitoring Committee will be constituted to monitor and make the process more transparent for the provinces.

The committee will oversee and monitor census activities to ensure that they are timely, transparent, and trustworthy. The committee would be led by the deputy chairman of the Planning Commission and will include all provincial chief secretaries, the chairman of NADRA, the chief commissioner of Islamabad, and other top officials.
