Karachi: The Sindh cabinet approved funds of PKR 50 billion for the construction of houses damaged in the recent flash floods, according to news published on November 17.

Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah chaired a cabinet meeting and decided that every owner of the damaged house will be provided PKR 50,000 to start construction of their house. It was mentioned that when the construction reaches the plinth level, the remaining amount of PKR 250,000 will be transferred to the bank account for completing the construction.
Moreover, CM Advisor on Agriculture Manzoor Wassan informed the cabinet that 3.6 million acres of standing crops were damaged in the flash floods and the farmers have suffered losses worth PKR 421 billion. He went on to say that the farmers were offered free wheat seed for which PKR 13.5 billion will be required. The news source mentioned that the provincial government will provide 8.39 billion while the federal government will contribute PKR 4.7 billion.
As per the details, the cabinet approved PKR 50 billion for Sindh People’s Housing for flood affectees to be used for Retrospective Financing for spending the amount on fully damaged houses, so the project may start disbursement until World Bank (WB) financing is available. During the meeting, the cabinet decided to engage well-reputed Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in order to make the process transparent.

It is important to note that 1.7 million houses have been damaged by the flood and the construction of houses will cost PKR 160 billion. WB has agreed to provide PKR 110 billion while the remaining amount will be provided by provincial and federal governments.
