Faisalabad: Faisalabad Divisional Commissioner (DC) Ishrat Hussain has said that businesses related to the construction industry would only be gradually reopened amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a news source reported.

The DC revealed that the government has formulated a strategy for the construction sector to keep a check on unemployment issues. He said this during his meeting with a delegation led by Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FCCI) President Rana Sikandar Azam. Hussain further said that the prevailing situation dictates the country to not only confront the COVID-19 pandemic but also deal with problems like unemployment, poverty, and economic downturn.

The DC said that the government was tackling all of these issues together and taking the stakeholders in confidence. He highlighted that the government was also implementing a smart lockdown – as the previous did not prove beneficial enough.

The FCCI president urged the government to permit businesses associated with the construction industry, including hardware, timber, paint, sanitary fittings, tiles, steel, and electric stores – to support the activities in the construction sector. He also urged the government to deliberate over the reopening of printing, packages, power looms, furniture, and similar small businesses – after implementation of the suggested standard operation procedures (SOPs).
