Islamabad: The government has constituted a high-powered committee under the Chairmanship of Dr Akmal Husssain and13 other members to provide poverty and inequality estimates at both the national and provincial levels, according to a news report published on September 23.

Reportedly, this is the first time when such a high-powered committee is mandated to come with provincial and national poverty levels simultaneously. In past, the federal government never released the provincial estimates owing to the regional/provincial sensitivities.

As per the available estimates from 2015-16, Pakistan’s 24.3% population lives below the poverty line. The newly-formed committee will update the poverty line 2018-19 and estimate provincial and the national cost of basic needs (CBN) and poverty and inequality numbers bases on the latest Household Integrated Economic Survey (HIES) data.
