Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cabinet on Tuesday (April 12) approved the proposal for bifurcation of the South Waziristan district for effective management and better services delivery, according to news sources.

The cabinet meeting was chaired by Chief Minister (CM) Mahmood Khan and was attended by administrative secretaries, ministers, and other relevant officers. The division of South Waziristan into Lower and Upper South Waziristan is a huge step to facilitate the locals, said Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif, a spokesperson of the government. He said that the Upper South Waziristan district will include Tayyarzai, Ladha, Makin, Shawal and Sarokai tehsils with Spinkai Rakhzai as its headquarters, whereas, the Lower South Waziristan district would consist of Wana, Loi Khwla, Shakai, and Birmil tehsils with Wana being its headquarters.
The spokesperson disclosed that the cabinet has also approved the formation of two new sub-tehsils, Utmanzai Wazir and Ahmadzai Wazir in the Wazir sub-division of Bannu. He added that the headquarters of the sub-tehsils will be Bakkakhel and Domel, respectively.
It is pertinent to note that former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan announced the bifurcation of South Waziristan into two administrative zones in September last year.

Reportedly, the cabinet meeting approved other proposals during the said meeting, including KP Livestock Sector Development Strategy and 10 years Business Plan, Fisheries Act 2021, Project Development Facility in the planning and development department, PKR 2 million compensation for those whose land was acquired for 300MW Balakot hydropower project.
