Karachi: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has initiated legal proceedings against the owners of 56 suspected benami properties in Karachi – a news source reported. Under the benami law, these properties may be confiscated if the sources of income used for their purchase cannot be substantiated by their owners.

Of the 56 cases, 36 cases were discovered by a joint investigation team, while the remaining 20 were identified by the local office. Moreover, the tax department also used third parties to obtain information on the actual beneficiaries of such properties in order to identify them.

According to the details, the board has already sent notices to the benamidar (the alleged owners of the suspected benami properties) asking them to provide information on their sources of income. They will have to face legal action if they refuse or are unable to do so.
