Lahore’s massive extension over the past decade has added much needed infrastructure in the extended areas. These areas in west and south of Lahore have become home to various housing societies including the posh ones. Access to housing societies in southern outskirts of the city has been made easy with the development of Lahore Ring Road, which is to soon reach the western outskirt and reduce its distance from the city’s central locations. In case of housing societies located along Bedian Road, the route is too shabby to match the lifestyle standards promised by these colonies.
For those looking to reach DHA Phase 6 & 7, Bedian Road is one of the main routes. This road was recently reconstructed to ease the heavy traffic flow but sadly it is a single road with unimaginable nature of encroachments done on both sides. The traffic on Bedian Road is hilarious as the drivers here do not follow any law and why should they when there is no one there to charge them on wrong parking etc.? There are several reasons why I believe travelling on Bedian Road is a real painful deed.
First, the road is narrow and single with equal amount of vehicles coming from both sides. Second, a huge variety of 4, 6, 3, and 2 wheelers pick to travel through it. Third, almost all of these drivers are impatient and inconsiderate of others on the road. Fourth, from fish stalls to fruit carts, all sorts of street hawkers can be found here covering half of the road at many parts. Fifth, both sides of the road have markets full of shoppers on feet. Sixth, there are no street lights, no road signs, no traffic wardens, no traffic management mechanism. Seventh, many of the people seen around and along Bedian Road are males, too interesting in being the audience of every single road side clash, be it physical or verbal. Eighth, wild dogs are found here in abundance. Ninth, the road is also self sufficient in sewerage and rain drains. And tenth, all of this is found along the entire length of the road.
Please, someone help me find out if the Bedian Road can be made any less painful for thousands of people who have no other choice but to travel through it?
P.S I have sent Zameen.com’s photographer Amir Ashiq to take images of the horrendous midday traffic on Bedian Road.
