Lahore: Punjab Minister for Environment Protection Muhammad Rizwan has announced that a ban on plastic bag usage is expected to be imposed in the Punjab as a follow-up to the similar measures recently introduced in Islamabad, a news source reported. Rizwan made this announcement during a meeting held at his office on Tuesday.

For this purpose, a proposal has been sent to the chief secretary by the Environment Protection Bureau in this regard. This development is being made keeping in mind the hazardous effects of plastic bags on the environment. They are one of the main causes of environmental degradation.

The minister told members present at the meeting that a bill will be tabled in the provincial assembly to create proper legislation for this ban. He also added that orders regarding plastic shopper bags from the Supreme Court will be implemented soon with an aim to entirely eradicate their use by the end of the year.
