Islamabad: Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul has said that the government’s ban on single-use plastic bags is aimed at ridding the national marketplace of an estimated 55 billion bags each year – paving the way for a ‘greener’ country, a news source reported.

She was speaking at an event organised by Oxfam Pakistan and Hashoo Foundation in their efforts to address country’s plastic bag pollution crisis. The project aims to explore sustainable solutions through the engagement of women entrepreneur in a bid to counter the effects of pollution.

She said that the country was seeing a massive rural-urban migration along with rapid urbanisation, which was bad for environment as the communities lacked the understanding of living in harmony with nature.The minister added that the ban was a part of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s ‘Clean and Green Pakistan’ initiative launched last year.
