Islamabad: Balochistan Minister for Environment, Livestock and Dairy Development Mitha Khan Kakar on Wednesday revealed that the provincial government had formulated a three-tier campaign to ban plastic use in Quetta under the government’s ‘Plastic Free Pakistan’ initiative, a news source reported.

Reportedly, the Balochistan environment department has already carried out all the necessary preparations for the plastic ban campaign. Minister Kakar said that the department would distribute eco-friendly bags among people to counter the threat of plastic bags and commence an awareness campaign for the purpose across the province. The department is also expected to reach out to people and deliver information regarding the negative effects of plastic usage.

The minister stated that the next phase of the campaign includes educating the masses about homemade alternatives to plastic bags. He further said that the government would offer locally produced jute bags under the Zero Plastic initiative.

The provincial government will first implement a ban on plastic bags in Quetta city and later, extend it to other cities and districts. Besides, the selling of plastic bags will be banned and violators fined on the spot under the laws of the Balochistan Environment Protection Agency (EPA).
