Quetta: The Balochistan government has completed a total of 64 small dams of the total promised 100 dams, news sources reported on March 24. The federal government announced a total of 100 dams throughout its five-year mandate to address the province’s water scarcity problem.

According to a provincial government official, the remaining 36 dams are now under construction and will be completed by 2026. The completed dams have a combined capacity of 52,000 acres feet of water storage, which would irrigate 25,850 acres of land in the province. The construction work on the remaining dams has been completed by 65%. Reportedly, the provincial administration is building dams to reduce water loss and increase subsurface water availability.

The government, according to the spokeswoman, has split the water projects into five parts. Three of the total phases have been completed, with the other two still in progress. The following are the stages’ specifics:
- In the first phase, 20 dams had been completed at a cost of PKR 2.4 billion
- In the second phase, 24 out of 26 dams had been completed at a cost of PKR 4.4 billion
- In the third phase, 20 more dams are scheduled to be completed at a cost of PKR 7.6 billion
- In the fourth phase, 23 dams will be completed
- In the fifth and final phase, 11 dams will be complete
