Quetta: The Balochistan government has imposed Section 144 on constructing residential and commercial structures along the natural water bodies and rivers, news sources reported on September 5.

Reportedly, in a notification issued by the Additional Chief Secretary Home & Tribal Affairs, the government has invoked Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 and banned any development within the limits of flood channels and irrigation drains throughout the province. The authorities said that the measure has been taken to avoid further encroachments, and any construction work within the limits of the flood channel is restricted with immediate effect. Following the imposition of the ban, the government will take action against any ongoing development activity and impose fines. It was also notified that the ban will be in place for the foreseeable future along all major flood channels and rivers.

It is important to mention that Balochistan is one of the worst flood-hit provinces in the country, with millions of people displaced and waiting for relief. The government has also appealed to international donors and relief organsiations to help rehabilitate people. The government estimates that 33 million people have been affected by the flood, with an estimated USD 10 billion in material damage.
