Karachi: The City Municipal Administration recently announced its decision to hold a ballot today (January 9) to relocate 405 displaced shopkeepers and office owners from the market compound situated near Karachi Zoo, a news source reported. The balloting process is currently underway.

Previously, officials concerned had removed the shops and offices around the zoo during an anti-encroachment operation in the city. The decision to hold the ballot came through during a meeting chaired by Mayor Wasim Akhtar on Wednesday.

The meeting also discussed the plan to relocate 295 of the displaced shopkeepers of Lunda Bazaar and Lyari Bus Stand. Officials concerned revealed that these shopkeepers, due to certain reasons, were hesitant of resuming their businesses in the alternative locations provided to them in Khadda Market and Shahabuddin Market. The meeting proceeded to discuss measures for to resolve this issue.

Deputy Mayor Arshad Hasan, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC)’s Metropolitan Commissioner, and heads of the various departments concerned also attended the meeting.
