Karachi: It has been decided that balloting would be held soon to allocate alternative places to shopkeepers and traders displaced in anti-encroachment operations in the city, according to a news source. The decision to do this was taken at a high-level meeting held at the Commissioner Office to review the strategy for a rehabilitation plan.

This meeting was attended by Special Assistant to Chief Minister Waqar Mehdi, Mayor Wasim Akhtar, Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani, and other high officials. Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Syed Saif-ur-Rehman informed the meeting that the affected shopkeepers and traders would be offered alternative places based on their previous location and size of business. It was revealed that these details have been collected and the authorities are ready to hold the balloting soon.

The restoration of Empress Market as an important heritage site was also discussed at the meeting, and it was decided that this plan would be implemented in close coordination with the provincial culture department.
