Karachi: The authorities concerned informed the Sindh Assembly that 213 acres of land would be reclaimed from a riverbed in Malir. However, the reclamation of land would not affect the flow of the river.
The assembly was told that the reclaimed land, near the Defence Housing Authority, could be used to develop a residential community or an industrial zone. Sindh Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Sikander Mandhro said Nespak, Irrigation Research Institute of Nandipur and the Institute of Oceanography had confirmed that the reclaimed land could be utilised for residential and commercial purposes. However, an embankment along the river would need to be built.
According to a news source, the government had invited tenders for the development of the embankment and received 10 tenders in response. The lowest bid of Rs 2.689 million was placed by a local company, which was then accepted by the government.
