Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has collaborated with Afghanistan and Teamup/National Incubation Centre and Coca-Cola Pakistan to ‘re-carpet national roads with plastic waste’, according to news sources. Under this initiative, a 1-kilometre stretch of Attaturk Avenue in Islamabad will be recarpeted with over 8+ tonnes of recycled plastic, including plastic/PET bottles.

Reportedly, the re-carpeting will be executed by mixing plastic waster with road construction materials. The project is part of the ‘World Without Waste’ initiative to achieve a zero packaging footprint. A government official stated, depending on the project’s success, CDA will build plastic roads in future at its own expense to help counteract environmental pollution.

This new technology is being used globally, however, it is for the first time that Pakistan is implementing the strategy under a public-private partnership. The roads recarpeted with plastic is twice as durable and 51% stronger, as per the studies executed.
