Rawalpindi: The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has asked for the provincial government’s permission to conduct a groundwater modelling study in Rawalpindi, a news source reported. The agency wants to conduct the study to assess the availability of groundwater in the area and determine where more tubewells can be installed.

The last time a similar study was conducted was back in 2006. A follow-up study could not be conducted 10 years later since the provincial government at the time had to allocate funds elsewhere.
A senior official of WASA told the media that an estimated 425 tubewells have been installed in the previous years. He emphasised the importance of conducting a to prevent extraction of too much groundwater. If groundwater levels recede, previously installed tubewells stop functioning.

The government has given permission to install 30 tubewells, of which 25 have been installed or are being working on. Locations for the installation of the remaining five are yet to be identified. These locations can only properly be identified after this study is conducted and experts are consulted.
