Lahore: Punjab Minister for Forest, Wildlife and Fisheries Muhammad Sabtain Khan has announced the launching of a province-wide anti-smog drive, a news source reported. Khan gave directives to kickstart campaigns, while he headed a meeting held to discuss smog situation in the province.

The meeting was attended by Forest Secretary Muhammad Asif, Deputy Secretary Muhammad Shahid, Chief Conservator Sajjad Hussain Shirazi, and other important officials representing the Punjab Forest, Wildlife and Fisheries Department. The members of the meeting were briefed on the 100-day progress of the department.

Under this anti-smog campaign, the Forest Department will plant 2,200 trees across various districts in Punjab. In addition, 575,690 plants are to be planted in 2019. Furthermore, the department is looking to plant 1.567 million large plants in the province, where each city will see the addition of 40,000 large plants. The meeting members were also informed that many more plants will be planted in the big cities of Punjab.

The campaign will be monitored by the Forest Department via geographic information system lab. The plantation drive is also a part of Clean and Green Initiative launched by Prime Minister Imran Khan to fight the global warming situation in the country.
In order to help fight smog in the province, various efforts are being taken; a crackdown against kilns is also part of these efforts. Furthermore, the pollution-causing kilns, factories, and cars have also been shut down on orders of Lahore High Court.
