Islamabad: The tax amnesty scheme announced by the government on April 5 hasn’t yet been availed by anyone as people are still unsure on what will be the Supreme Court (SC)’s verdict on it, according to a news source. The apex court earlier indicated that it will review the money whitening scheme, suggesting that the amnesty scheme may come under scrutiny.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Revenue Haroon Akhtar Khan said that those looking to avail the scheme are anxiously waiting for the SC’s verdict on tracing and bringing back money to bank accounts and immovable overseas assets owned by Pakistanis.
Khan is hopeful that as soon as SC approves the scheme, an immediate and massive response will be seen among those looking to avail it. He also claimed that the amnesty scheme is the replica of what a committee of SC recommended earlier. Furthermore, he also said that people looking to turn their money white are approaching the government with their queries about it; while many have also downloaded the forms to avail it.
Khan also told the news source that SC and other major stakeholders were taken into confidence Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi before the announcement of the tax amnesty scheme.
