Islamabad: President Dr Arif Alvi on Wednesday issued orders to the authorities concerned for the development of shanty settlements (katchi abadis) on modern lines to ensure the provision of hospitals, schools, colleges, mosques, parks and road services across the country, according to news sources.

He further stated that the vulnerable segments of the society remained neglected in the past; adding that it was time to elevate their living standards. He expressed his views on the matter during a follow-up meeting on the transformation of shanty settlements (located in Karachi and other cities of the country) into developed localities.

The meeting mulled various proposals to transform katchi abadis into residential colonies. The said meeting attendees included Secretary to the President Tariq Najeeb Najmi, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail, Naya Pakistan Housing Authority (NPHA) Chief Lt Gen (retired) Anwar Hyder, Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) Firdous Shamim Naqvi, and Housing Secretary Dr Imran Zeb Khan.
