Chitral: The Aga Khan Rural Support Program (AKRSP) has installed the country’s first prepaid consumer power metre in the Chitral district, news sources reported on April 6. The rechargeable metres will be first installed in the Laspur Valley of the Chitral district.

Reportedly, the smart metre will cut off the power supply once the recharged amount has been consumed. The company has placed intelligent metres that will be recharged in advance to restrict energy usage and make it more affordable for inhabitants of mountainous areas. Consumer families will be able to recharge it from local vendors based on their demands and capacities. According to the company, the initiative would revolutionise intelligent energy usage since there would be no defaults on outstanding payments. As a result, the company will be able to conduct its operations more effectively.

The Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP) is a private, non-profit organisation founded in 1982 by the Aga Khan Foundation to enhance the quality of life in Gilgit, Baltistan and Chitral (GBC). The company has constructed a 500 Kilowatt (KW) hydropower plant in the region to provide an inexpensive and innovative source of electricity.
