Muzaffarabad: Senior Minister for Tourism and Physical Planning and Housing Sardar Tanveer Ilyas on Monday (February 7) has shared that Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) plans to set up a tourism authority in order to tap into the huge potential of tourism for socio-economic uplift of the locals in the province, according to news reports.

The senior minister disclosed that the proposal for the establishment of a tourism authority will be tabled before the cabinet for approval in the next meeting. He went on to say that the demarcation and allocation of land for special economic tourism zones at the tehsil and district levels will be started.
Reportedly, the tourism authority will plan new projects, facilitate investors through a business-friendly one-window operation. The minister notified that the launch of several projects for the urban development sector is planned. Sharing more details, he mentioned that the latest town planning and construction mechanism will be introduced in Mirpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad divisions. Also, a proper workable waste management plan will be devised and implemented.

Moreover, the minister stated that the exploitation of the tourism sector was crucial as the province lacks employment opportunities in the private sector. AJK has a huge tourism potential as there are several sites for nature enthusiasts along with numerous sporting activities like paragliding, skating, skiing, polo, and river rafting.
