Lahore: The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will provide a soft loan of PKR 50 billion for the Waste and Surface Water Treatment Project, according to a news report. It is a project by the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), aimed at providing clean drinking water to the citizens for the conservation of groundwater aquifer.
WASA will set up one surface water treatment and three waste water treatment plants in Lahore. A screening committee of AIIB has cleared the project and a technical committee has been sent to discuss details with WASA authorities. The loan can be expected to be released in September 2018, according to WASA Managing Director Zahid Aziz.
The three waste water treatment plants will be established near Mehmood Booti, Shadbagh, and Shahdara. These will treat almost 40 percent of the waste water in Lahore. The surface water treatment plant will be built near Ravi Syphon. WASA MD also said that a mini-dam will also be constructed near Ravi Syphon for the surface water treatment plant.
