Islamabad: Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) President Jin Liqun expressed his interest in providing funds for a number of development projects within Pakistan, a news source reported. As per the publication, the AIIB president revealed this information during a meeting with senior officials from the Government of Pakistan.

President Liqun met with Minister of Economic Affairs Division Hammad Azhar and, in an official statement released after their meeting, stated that the bank was fully committed to supporting the socioeconomic development of Pakistan — in line with the priorities of the local government.

The purpose behind the AIIB delegation’s visit to Pakistan is to understand the country’s developmental needs and priorities. The bank is keen on investing in various sectors like transportation, water supply, power generation, information technology, and social justice, as well as other infrastructural projects.

Responding to the AIIB’s interest in providing funds for development projects, Minister Azhar said that the bank’s commitment reflected its confidence in the government’s reforms agenda. He went on to state that the AIIB had been a valuable contributor to Pakistan’s ‘developmental path’.

Azhar further reaffirmed that the Pakistan government was increasingly focused on initiating and completing projects that focused on social development within the country — as such projects helped achieve other long-term goals as well.
