Karachi: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday directed the Sindh government and local civic agencies concerned to address Karachi’s infrastructural woes, in order to prevent the city from attaining a state of ‘massive collapse’, a news source reported.

A two-judge bench of the apex court comprising Justices Gulzar Ahmed and Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel issued orders on a case pertaining to the removal of encroachments from parks, playgrounds, and other amenity spaces in the city.
The bench stressed on the need for pursuing combined efforts for identifying solutions to the city’s infrastructural and civic issues. For this end, it ordered Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to coordinate with Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar and the other officials concerned.
It also barred businesses and individuals from encroaching footpaths in the city. It directed the authorities to restore the footpaths and other public spaces, as well as construct bridges in a bid to facilitate pedestrians.

Moreover, the apex court directed the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) to cancel all kinds of allotments, leases, and transfers pertaining to the port’s land on an immediate basis.
