Islamabad: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has pledged additional funds worth USD 75 million for road rehabilitation and maintenance project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a news source reported. The project aims to improve conditions of road and driver safety.
Under the project, the authorities concerned would renovate 42 kilometres of the total length (53.9km) of Mardan-Swabi Road, which, due to its dilapidated condition, has become extremely dangerous for travelers.
In November 2017, the ADB approved USD 140 million for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Road Improvement Project to rehabilitate eight sections of key provincial roads and improve transport efficiency and safety.
In May this year, the then government requested additional funds for the project as it sought to widen the existing two-lane road between Mardan and Swabi to four-lane divided road.
The Mardan–Swabi Road runs through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s agricultural heartland between the Indus and Kabul rivers. The average number of vehicles that run daily on the road is 7,000.
