Peshawar: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 320 million loan to support the rehabilitation of rural roads in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), as reported on September 13.

As per detail, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rural Roads Development Project will focus on upgrading approximately 900 kilometers of flood-prone roads to enhance safe, all-weather connectivity for remote communities. The project includes climate-resilient road designs, safety improvements, and sustainable maintenance practices.
The upgraded infrastructure will reduce travel time, lower transportation costs, and improve access to education, healthcare, and markets, benefiting millions of residents. ADB Director General for Central and West Asia, Yevgeniy Zhukov, emphasized the importance of this project in driving inclusive economic growth in one of Pakistan’s underserved regions.

The project will also include a comprehensive flood susceptibility study and landslide vulnerability analysis to prioritise road improvements. Additionally, ADB will help the government develop concessional contracts for operating and maintaining two key tourism roads to ensure long-term sustainability.
