Karachi: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has granted a USD 2 million technical assistance package for the development of the Sindh Coastal Resilience Sector Project, according to news published in the leading newspaper on October 25.

This initiative is aimed at fortifying the coastal region of Sindh, focusing on the Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin districts. These areas have experienced environmental degradation, resulting in challenges such as land subsidence, flooding, erosion, and saline intrusion. With the looming threat of climate change exacerbating these issues, coupled with high poverty rates, low education and literacy levels, and limited access to basic amenities, there is an urgent need for a holistic risk mitigation approach that integrates nature-based solutions.
Moreover, the technical assistance provided will facilitate the government in preparing the project to a high level of readiness, consisting of two key components:
- the creation of a coastal resilience strategic framework with priority investments
- the preparation of the project with an enhanced state of readiness

This initiative aligns with operational priorities of ADB, including advancing gender equality, addressing climate change and enhancing climate and disaster resilience, and promoting rural development and food security.
