Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has retired and with him, an era of excellence has come to an end. Chaudhry, for millions of Pakistanis, stood as the symbol of blind justice and emerged as the ray of hope for democracy.
Now you can literally fill books with his services for the country but this post is specifically designed to pay him a tribute and recount some of his memorable property related (and otherwise) decisions.
Arsalan Iftikhar case
Bahria Town has been the epicentre of a lot of controversies but when Arsalan Iftikhar’s name started making news headlines, it was the CJP himself who took notice of the whole situation.
As always, Zameen.com did present its own viewpoint as to how the whole case had affected the performance of Bahria Town as a project. Whatever the outcome of the case has been, it can be said safely that Chaudhry did set up a good example by summoning his own son to the court. It was unlike anything we had seen before in Pakistan.
EOBI scandal
This was a million dollar fraud that jeopardized billions of rupees of Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution funds. As was expected of him, CJP hauled the accused, which included many important government and non government officials, in the court of law. Because of this and many other cases, the people of Pakistan truly felt for perhaps the first time that no one, absolutely no one is above the law.
Miscellaneous
Some of the most important suo moto notices taken by the CJP were NOT related to property or real estate in any form but they were however very important for the country in general.
The Missing Persons case, privatization of Steel Mill of Pakistan, Memogate Scandal, Benazir Bhutto murder case, Karachi and Baluchistan violence and the Ricodik scandal were all extremely important cases taken up by the court and for this and every other thing, I salute the Chief Justice of Pakistan for making Pakistan proud.
