Islamabad: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Wednesday (March 2) decided that the Pakistan Emergency Helpline (PEHEL)-911 will be a one-stop emergency relief point for the citizens in crisis, according to news sources reported March 4.

PM Khan, while chairing a review meeting on PEHEL-911, stated that securing the life and assets of people is a priority for the government. The PM was briefed that the helpline will provide all emergency services including motorway police, fire brigade, disaster recovery, health assistance, and police assistance. It was disclosed that 36 emergency numbers are integrated; people will just have to dial 911 and the centre will forward the call to the relevant department. The premier ordered the relevant authorities to make sure the helpline is launched by Ramazan this year.

The initiative is a joint venture of the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Information Technology & Telecommunication. The National Information Technology Board (NITB) of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication and the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) will provide backend infrastructure and technical assistance so the project could be implemented smoothly. The Interior Ministry will be responsible for coordination between emergency services at both provincial and federal levels.
