Karachi: The city administration plans to provide temporary structures to as many as 3,500 tenants of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), a news source quoted Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani. He was chairing a meeting that was also attended by Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar, the commissioner, Adviser to the Chief Minister on Information Murtaza Wahab, and others.
It was brought to the attention of the minister that the total number of KMC tenants displaced during the ongoing anti-encroachment drive stood at 3,575. A summary in this regard had already been prepared that would be forwarded to the chief minister.
KMC had sought a special grant from the provincial government so that it could remove debris of the demolished shops, reconstruct footpaths, and carry out patchwork and beautification of the metropolis.
On his part, the minister said a committee headed by adviser Waqar Mehdi and comprising metropolitan commissioner and deputy commissioner South would scrutinise the KMC record and submit its recommendations within three days.
He said the city administration would accommodate 3,500 KMC tenants in temporary structures in the first phase. The shops would be constructed in KMC markers and government land.
In the second phase, he added, displaced traders not paying rent to KMC would be provided a place to run their businesses.
